Benefits of solar hot water

Save up to 60% on your hot water bills

During the summer months, correctly specified solar systems produce almost all of a household's hot water requirements.  In the winter months, solar systems will generate around 30% of your hot water.  For a well designed system, this will provide between 40% and 60% of your annual hot water needs.

Works when it's cloudy

Solar systems rely on solar radiation not direct sunlight. A solar hot water system can therefore still heat water on cloudy days. If there is heavy cloud for a number of days, your back-up hot water heating system automatically heats the water.

10-20 year panel guarantees

The panels we recommend have between 10 and 20 year guarantees, giving you peace of mind that the panels will last a long time.

Renewable Heat Incentive

In October 2012, the government is planning to introduce a financially attractive incentive for households that install solar hot water systems. The government’s current proposal is that all solar hot water installations carried out by MCS accredited installers after 15 July 2009 will qualify for this scheme.

Protect yourself from rising energy prices

Gas price index

The government has stated that the introduction of the UK Renewable Energy Strategy will make gas prices increase by 18% to 37% by 2020. According to the government department OFGEM, domestic UK energy bills could increase by 60% by 2016.  OFGEM also warns that wholesale prices could spike as a result of global economies competing for energy resources. The historic price of gas can be seen in the chart below [source: Department of Energy and Climate Change].

With energy prices for gas and oil expected to increase, protect yourself from extra costs by installing solar hot water.

Feel good

Be part of the solution to climate change and feel good about using the sun to create clean renewable energy.

Other benefits

Here are some other benefits of installing solar hot water:

  • Quick and easy to install
  • Easily retrofitted onto existing hot water systems
  • Panels only require a small roof area
  • Long component lifetime
